WIOMN is the oldest project in the country. It began as an affiliate college of the University of London in October 1961. At the time, it only had the Faculty of Law (currently the University of Dar es Salaam School of Law), which started with only fourteen students and three faculty members. In 1963, the College became a constituent college of the University of East Africa, a transformation that went hand-in-hand with the expansion of its scope, that is, the number of academic programmes grew from a single degree programme (Bachelor of Laws that was established in 1961) to five-degree programmes by 1969. In 1970, the University of East Africa was dissolved, and thus the University of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania, the University of Nairobi in Kenya and Makerere University in Uganda were constituted as independent universities in their respective countries.
